The founding Boucicaut family

In 1852, Aristide Boucicaut invented modern commerce by creating the world’s first department store, Le Bon Marché. With his wife, Marguerite, he transformed a simple shop into a unique department store, featuring a wide selection where you could browse freely without being disturbed. Thus Le Bon Marché was born, and soon its innovations multiplied: fixed prices, lower margins, home deliveries, exchange of goods, mail order, sales, a library corner... This model, created by this forward-thinking and revolutionary couple, went on to become an inspiration around the world.

High-end department store

In 1923, in new buildings on the corner of Rue du Bac and Rue de Sèvre, Le Bon Marché opened a ‘food counter’, where exceptional teas and quality preserves were offered for the first time in a department store. Displays and presentations highlighting a particular country were quickly established, and the subsequent showcasing of fresh produce was entirely innovative for the time. Nevertheless, it was not until 1978 that La Grande Épicerie de Paris would see the light of day, quickly becoming a Parisian institution among the Rive Gauche gourmets. Following the purchase of Le Bon Marché by the Groupe LVMH, Le Bon Marché re-positioned itself as a high-end Parisian store, reflecting the unique spirit of the Rive Gauche.

An unmissable experience

In 1988, La Grande Épicerie de Paris, a subsidiary of Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche, evolved again to become a leading food store. In 1999, after the redevelopment of its departments and a new graphic identity, a visit to La Grande Épicerie de Paris became an “absolute must, a true pleasure, a real privilege”. As a gold standard of Parisian gastronomy, it attracted gourmets and lovers of all things exceptional from all over the world. At the end of 2013, following 18 months of renovations, La Grande Épicerie de Paris celebrated yet another renaissance. Today you can make the most of this unique experience: the knowledge and expertise of food professionals, an increasingly extensive selection of exceptional products – rare and traditional – and, of course, new departments and services.

La Grande Épicerie de Paris Rive Droite

On 9 November 2017, La Grande Épicerie de Paris crossed the Seine and opened La Grande Épicerie de Paris Rive Droite in the building that once housed the Franck et Fils department store. Magnanimity, quality, originality... the spirit and values of La Grande Épicerie de Paris re-emerge in this new space dedicated to gastronomy, where immense mosaics adorn the stands and the graphic lines of its famous escalators provide a sense of structure. The new food hall is now home to a large selection of products – from the rarest to the most iconic – that feature in the collection at La Grande Épicerie Rive Gauche. The store at 80 Rue de Passy also has a few surprises of its own, including a number of tasting points and a top-floor restaurant led by young chef Beatriz Gonzalez.
