Château Léoville Barton, second Grand Cru Classé, is on one of the best outcrops of gravel in the Garonne, at the heart of the Bordeaux appellation of Saint-Julien. The 40-year-old vines grow on Garonne gravels with clay-gravel subsoil, the oldest parcel dating from 1953. The Barton family, owners of the estate for almost 200 years, is the longest continuous dynasty of all the Médoc Grands Crus Classés. Thomas Barton left his native Ireland for Bordeaux in 1725. He rapidly established his first wine trading company. His grandson Hugh was the first in the family to own a vineyard in Bordeaux: Château Langoa Barton. He bought the Léoville estate in 1826, re-naming it Léoville Barton. After several generations, today it's Anthony Barton, his son Lilian and his two grandchildren who look after the trading company and the two houses.

    Tasting notes

The bouquet opens with notes of white flowers, cedar, violet and acacia. Then black fruit aromas emerge, such as blackcurrant and blueberry, and mingle with a delicate, spicy touch of liquorice. Supple and full-bodied on the palate, developing into freshness and a tannic thread, all the while in balance. A finish with notes of undergrowth, mild spices and ripe fruit.
