The secrets of the 2010, 2011 and 2012 vintages

This year, our experts have selected over 54 Bordeaux wines from among the best appellations. The 2010 vintage brings all its prestige to this selection of promising wines, with even second wines alongside Grands Crus. Arriving at full maturity, the 2011 and 2012 vintagesare distinguished by their suppleness and full-bodied attack on the palate.
On the occasion of our Rentrée des Vins, discover the particularities of each of these three vintages selected by our Cellar Master.

The vintage: in search of the right balance

To pierce the secrets of a great year, return first to the fundamentals that can turn a year into a celebrated vintage. According to Emmanuel Petit, sales manager in Wine & Spirits, a vintage is characterised by the perfect balance between a land, favourable meteorological conditions and the expertise of the wine-maker, refined over the years. His work is particularly decisive in the elaboration of a vintage because only they will know how to draw the essence from the vines, despite a sometimes extreme climate.

A dry summer, for example, tends to bring early maturity. This means a higher concentration of sugars, sometimes to the detriment of the acidity that plays a decisive role in the maturation of a wine. Conversely, a wetter season can give particular richness, but risks diluting the acidity. The wine-maker's expertise and specific knowledge of his land are vital, allowing him to 'sense' the right moment to harvest the grapes, when conditions are optimal.

2010: the promise of a great vintage

At La Grande Épicerie de Paris, our sommeliers seek to offer you wines brought almost to maturity so that you can benefit immediately. The 2010 vintage is marked by beautiful acidity, whose full potential will continue to be revealed in years to come. These promising wines can be appreciated now or laid down for a while to accompany a future occasion.
Among the big names in our 2010 selection are second wines as well as those of world-famous estates.

Our sommeliers particularly recommend Carruades de Lafite Rothschild; this second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild synthesises all the richness of the year 2010, marked by a cold, wet winter leading into a sunny summer. It has remarkable balance on the palate and finesse.
Another jewel of this vintage: Château La Bessane. This mature Margaux reveals a silky texture with delicate tannins. It strikes you with its impressive length on the palate.
Finally, Château Phélan Ségur has become one of the essentials of Saint-Estèphe.
The estate's vines, sustainably cultivated on a soil of clay-covered pebbles, give wine of delicate minerality that contrasts wonderfully with its notes of fruit and liquorice.

2011 and 2012: popular Grands Crus, ready to drink

2011 and 2012 had irregular and, therefore, more complex climatic conditions. Thanks to the excellent work by the wine-makers associated with a careful selection of grapes, keeping only the best, certain great Bordeaux estates fared remarkably well.
2011 and 2012 are, therefore, vintages of limited quantity but sometimes very popular, like Château Chasse-Spleen, classified Grand Cru Exceptionnel since 1932. This charming vintage shows excellent balance, blending delicate tannins with a texture both full-bodied and silky.
Château Dutruch Grand Poujeaux 2012 imposes itself as a characterful wine, as complex as it is elegant . Its roundness and balance, supported by elegant tannins, will surprise you.
Jewels to discover at exceptional prices for the whole of September, in the shop and on the La Grande Épicerie de Paris website!

The estate has been known since the 12th century. It was then called "la Mothe de Margaux" and had no vines. Many important lords succeeded to the estate.
